The redfish have been biting all year with the exception of the coldest week we've had in over a decade. Luckily, it did not stay cold enough to kill off any trout or redfish. The bite has slowly shifted from large schools of reds eating whole and cut mullet to smaller schools of big and medium sized fish eating blue crabs. The big trout are showing up in droves right behind the menhaden. I still have some days open for the last week in April and first week in May so hurry while they are biting! I am also taking reservations for a limited number of kite fishing trips and tarpon trips! I hope everyone is well and remember, you can't catch em sittin on the couch.

The Cardinal family on a hot redfish bite!

The weather was cold and sunny and we had plenty of bait. The first sitings of the day came from Tim on the bow. He said "look, I can see one swimming in the grass". As I lifted my head to see what he was referring to, I noticed an entire school of 100+ fish wondering slowly through the grass in front of us. We caught three nice ones in a row and then a bottle nosed dolphin showed up for breakfast and as quickly as it all started, it was over. The fish froze up and wouldn't touch a bait.

Redfish Mafia

If your on this site, your either pleasantly lost or you like to fish. Found a bunch of reds in shallow on the low tide but they wouldn't eat. We only threw artificials though. They probably would have eaten the Blue Crabs but we were just scouting for some new schools. Also found a nice school of big trout up on a redfish flat. Never seen trout there before but they were lathargic and they also would not eat. It's going to be going off though real soon if these warm days keep coming. Maybe not all day. They were tough to find in the morning up the Wando. Went to the same spots I've been fishing for three weeks and there have been over 200 fish in one of them. But yesterday, no dice. Wind was out of the North and it had rained all night so that didn't help. So we switched gears and ran around the point and up the waterway to Capers Inlet where we found a nice school of reds in the 20-30 inch range. Worked hard but finally found some!

Blame it on the rain!

Sitting at the computer watching it rain cats and dogs. 3 cancelled trips so far since Friday. Graham Hegermayer and Capt. Tucker Blythe. Found a bunch of reds and threw the fly for a while. It's warming up and there were some tailing fish for a change. Live or dead bait would have crushed them! Got two bites on the Z-man clear shrimp but the rest were looking for crabs. The blue crabs are going to be the bait of choice for the next few months! This weekend should be awesome fishing! The fishing has been phenomenal this entire year and the past few weeks have been no exception. The trout are really biting now and the redfish have continued to surprise us with every trip. They are both in the harbor and around the waterway, especially closer to the inlets. Contrary to what my not so common since tells me, they have actually been biting in the 51-54 degree water instead of the warmer waters back in the sounds. I think water depth and clarity are a bigger factor right now due to the rain as of recent. The trout are hanging from 4 -10 feet deep in some spots and the reds are all mixed in. Live shrimp and minnows are always a good bet but the new Z-Man clear shrimps have been catching them just fine. On foggy or overcast days, the Red Ripper Spoon Buzzers from Nemire Lures have been destroying the reds and trout! Sheepshead are swarming on slack tides on any under water structure as well as the pilings in the waterway. Even one pole can hold 10-15 fish right now! The key to winter time fishing is less lead, lighter FLOROCARBON leaders and smaller hooks. On your topwater plugs, take the old hooks off amd down size them. if there are three hooks, remove the middle ones. If the bait still has good action, you'll catch more fish!
On another note, I am running a special for Christmas this year. Anyone who buys a 1/2 day inshore trip Gift Certificate before Christmas, gets another one for free, as well as 2 visors and 2 coozies. They make great gifts. Especially if you think the recipient will ask you to go with them. Also, I can give full price receipts for tax deductions. If you think your going to go next year, its worth it! All come with my guarantee also, if we don't catch what we are after, you get to go again for free. Thanks and I hope the holidays are safe and wonderful for all of you!

July 2nd. What a morning.

Glad to be back!!!

After taking a month off from the inshore to take a boat to North Carolina and Blue Marlin fish, I am glad to be back in the Lowcountry catching the hell out of the fish.

John, Ray, and Larry- What can I say?

What a way to start the week. The wind was blowing incredibly hard and the water was really muddy. A few trout were caught here and there on DOA's but nothing to write home about. Wednesday was a different story all together! I took Jimmy Herman and some of his buddies and we caught 21/25 reds in the waterway on crabs. It was stellar day but I know no idea how much better the fishing was going to get. on Thursday the 9th, I took Charles Weinhymer and his kids in the morning and TJ sack and some clients of his in the afternoon. The end of the week was bad due to weather but it was a productive 3 days in the middle of the week.

Hottest Spring Bite in Years!!!!!!

What a month it has been. Business is better than last year but still a bit slow. The fishing on the other hand has been the best I have ever seen in the Spring! I don't know if I'm getting lucky or the fish are getting stupid and I really don't care either way. It has been awesome and does not show any signs of slowing down. On the 4th I took an old client who has had the luck on his side eveytime. Last year he caught 14 big red fish with me and this year we fished the sounds and hooked into a dozen and caught most of them in the 25-30 inch range. They were chomping at the bit for pre-shed crabs (peelers). The next day we fished the same sounds on the SW wind and again, could not stay out of the big reds. Jesse Rhodes and his parents caught 8 big ones in the first hour and all on 6 lb tackle!

The past couple of weeks have been pretty crazy. I have done a few trips and the fishing has been great. Chris Brownlee of BB and T and some of his clients went with me on the 20th. The wind was blowing but we managed to get 18 Red fish bites and caught 11 of them. All nice sized fish too. Since then the most notable catches have been trout up the Wando on DOA's and Bass Assassin Grubs. The root beer and gold colors have been working well. As always, the Reds are eating blue crabs and mullet on the bottom. I'll try to keep you posted as often as I can. Get out there and fish while the fishing is good!

More lamb than lion!

Yesterday was a whole different ball Game. Finally the water is warm enough to get away from the dock fishing and the wind is not blowing. We started out around Ben sawyer bridge and caught 14 nice slotty reds. e then fished around Breach Inlet and picked up 4 or 5 more. All in all, 18/24 on the Red Fish. I think this week is going to be great with the weather letting up and the sun shining. It should warm the water up and talk the Reds and Trout into biting. I'll keep you posted. For now, look for clean water above 60 degrees and put some crabs and mullet on the bottom. Put the rods in the rod holders. Down hold onto them!!!!!!! Light leader, 12-15 pounds, should be the right combo. Good luck.

Wind Insurance

I fished Saturday with our good friends from The Farm Bureau. It was little cool and windy but the fishing wasn't that bad. They had 30 people and we took 9 boats. I am pretty sure the top boats were Champ Smith with 12 reds and myself with 11 reds. Only one boat out of the 9 got skunked but I won't say who that was. He is a great fisherman though and it really surprised me. We caught most of our fish in the creeks around docks and the water was 55-56 degrees. It turned out a little better that we had anticipated but it was till tough. The tide stay high for a long time which hurt us a lot. It will keep getting better as the temp keeps going up. Until next time, keep your head up, its easier to see where your going.

ALL DOWN HILL FROM HERE

Yesterday was windy one but I was greeted at the landing by some welcomed news. The temp gauge read 59.2 degrees. I knew as we headed up the waterway that it would keep climbing and it did, 62 degrees! That's what I'm talking about. When the water gets up and stays above 60, we are home free until December. The wind hurt us yesterday and we had to hide and dock fish all day but we still managed to catch 5 Reds and we had a few more bites. When the wind finally breaks, the fishing should be incredible. I have a few trips this week and they should be good. Until next time, go fishing cause you can't catch em on the couch.

Cold and Windy

Had a nice couple of days this past week with regards top the weather. I had a trip Saturday morning with three guys from up the road in North Carolina. We found a school of reds right off the bat but they would not eat a thing. We tried crabs, DOA's, spoons, grubs, minnows. You name it we tried it. We left the pot flat and went up the Wando River and fished around the barge to try and pick up a sheep or a red and no dice. The wind picked up and it dropped 20 degrees. So much for a nice Saturday on the water. The company was great but the fish did not cooperate. We'll have to get on thm next time boys. Until then, bundle up cause you can always take it off!

Winter Break

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and a safe and happy New Year! This pat Sunday, December 28, I fished a double. I had Charlie Chamberlin Jr. and Sr. in the morning and Clay Olsen and is dad in the afternoon. The day started out tough but we ended the first trip strong with a dozen Sheepsheads and 4 Reds.

On the second trip, we tried to catch some Sheeps but to no avail. We fished a ton of spots looking for the Reds and Trout and came up empty. In the last hour of the trip, we finally put a quick 10 fish in the boat. Including these two beauties.

Like it has been for the past few months, the fishing is outstanding right now. Today was a little hard with the wind blowing 30 but we caught a Redfish. It was disappointing for a lot of guides from what I hear. It should be nothing short of spectacular when the wind stops!
